Abstract

Objective: This study was carried out to determine the effect of endometriosis on women’s sexual life and quality of life.

Methods: A comparative descriptive study was conducted with 194 women (97 women diagnosed with endometriosis and 97 healthy women). The data were obtained by the face-to-face interview method using the “Descriptive Information Form,” “Female Sexual Function Scale (FSFI),” “Short Form Health Survey (SF-36),” and “Endometriosis Health Profile Questionnaire (EHP-5).” The statistical significance value in the analysis of the data is P < .05.

Results: The mean age of women with endometriosis was 31.66 ± 4.83 years, and the mean age at menarche was 13.10 ± 1.26 years. Among these women, 25.8% had a family history of endometriosis, 99% reported dysmenorrhoea, 95.9% reported pelvic pain, 95.9% reported rectal pain, and 73.2% reported dyspareunia. It was determined that women with endometriosis experienced more severe and more pain in terms of the pain subscale of the EHP-5 scale than women without endometriosis. According to the multivariate analysis, physical function, mental health, emotional role limitation of the SF-36 quality of life scale, and pain subscale of the endometriosis-specific EHP-5 quality of life scale were found to be predictive factors of sexual dysfunction in women with endometriosis.

Conclusion: In this study, it was determined that endometriosis negatively affected women’s quality of life and sexual life, and pain related to endometriosis was a predictive factor for negative quality of life and sexual dysfunction.
